Supplementary Food Program
In April 2012, the Council established a partnership with the 100X Foundation and President Singletary visited Mtendere Village a project of 100X Development Foundation in Malawi to house and care for orphaned children.
The 100X Development Foundation is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that seeks to generate and support creative solutions to eradicate poverty and its negative effects. Working in six countries around the world, and the United States, the 100X Foundation strives to meet the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of Ending Poverty and Hunger; providing Universal Education; promoting Gender Equality, addressing the needs of Children and Maternal Health by empowering individuals, communities and organizations that are implementing best practice programs to transform the lives of impoverished communities throughout the world.
Mtendere Village is home to 140 of the estimated one million orphaned children in Malawi. Mtendere Village is made up of 11 family-style houses, each run by a house mother who acts as the primary support and caregiver for the children under her charge.
To support the nutritional needs of the children in the Mtendere Village and the supporting community, the 100X Foundation in collaboration with a local company distributes bags of nutritional meal to children at risk for malnourishment. Each month, children are given a ticket by the Chiefs of neighboring villages which allows them to receive a 20-pound bag of the meal.
The Council, with its affiliates, works in collaboration with a soup kitchen in Durham, South Africa as a part of our HIV/Education, Prevention and Care program. This program provides nutritional support for HIV/AIDS patients who need to be well fed enough to take the HIV/AIDS drugs being given to them.
Feeding programs in rural Ghana provides rice and other staples to poor families. The number of people being served continues to rise and so the need for our continued support has risen as well.
